The Osun State Football Association (Osun FA) has announced September 16 as the kickoff date for the highly anticipated second edition of the Smartcity Osun State Football League. This decision was made following a stakeholders meeting held at the Taiwo Joseph Ogunjobi Football House, underscoring the association’s commitment to promoting grassroots football in the state.
Speaking at the meeting, Comrade Fatai Tunde Salami, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, urged participating teams to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the league. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game, appealing to teams to avoid any actions that could tarnish the reputation of the league or football in general. Salami expressed gratitude to the sponsors for providing a platform that allows raw talents to be discovered and nurtured.
The opening fixtures of the league will take place at the Lanreleke Sports Complex in Ileogbo, marking the beginning of an exciting season. Telu FC will face off against Ejigbo FA, while Ileogbo Utd will clash with Ayedire FC in the morning matches. Football action will unfold across the three senatorial districts of Osun State, promising an engaging second season for fans and participants alike.
The Smartcity Osun State Football League is a visionary project initiated by the Osun State Football Association, led by Mayor Sola Fanawopo, reflecting the association’s dedication to developing football at the grassroots level in Osun State. The FA scribe, Abayomi Amoo, revealed that the primary objective of the tournament is to identify promising young players who could be eligible for the upcoming FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) program, set to be hosted in Osun State. The kickoff is expected to be performed by the General Manager, Osun State Sports Council, Mr. Ademola Daini.
